Hospital
Services
A hospital greeter is often the first point of contact for patients and visitors, helping create a welcoming and supportive environment. Their role is focused on assistance and guidance rather than clinical care.
Typical responsibilities include:
Welcoming patients and visitors as they arrive
Providing directions to departments, clinics, or patient rooms
Answering basic questions about hospital services and facilities
Assisting with check-in processes or guiding people to registration areas
Ensuring visitors follow hospital policies (like visiting hours or sign-in procedures)
Beyond these tasks, a greeter plays an important human role—offering reassurance, reducing confusion, and helping people feel more at ease in what can sometimes be a stressful environment.
An in-patient volunteer supports patients who are staying in the hospital, helping make their experience more comfortable and less isolating. While they don’t provide medical care, they play an important supportive role alongside healthcare staff.
Typical responsibilities include:
Visiting patients to offer companionship and conversation
Providing reading material, activities such as crossword puzzles, adult colouring etc.
Assisting with non-clinical needs like adjusting pillows or helping patients get settled.
Supporting meal service (e.g., handing out trays or helping patients open packages). As permitted by medical staff, providing hot beverages or water to patients.
In-patient volunteers help create a more caring, human-centered environment by providing comfort, reducing loneliness, and giving patients a friendly presence during their stay.
A volunteer in a dialysis clinic provides non-medical support to patients who are receiving regular treatments, helping make long and often tiring sessions more comfortable.
Typical responsibilities include:
Greeting patients and helping them feel welcome and at ease
Offering companionship during treatment (conversation, reading, or quiet presence)
Providing comfort items like blankets, pillows, or refreshments (if allowed)
Assisting with small tasks such as organizing personal belongings or adjusting seating (non-clinical only)
Supporting staff with light administrative or organizational duties
Helping maintain a calm, clean, and supportive environment
Because dialysis treatments can take several hours and occur multiple times a week, volunteers play an important role in reducing boredom, anxiety, and isolation by simply being present and attentive.
